Carney Lab, Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Davis, United States
Short bio Dr. Randy Carney is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Davis.
He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Arkansas, followed by an M.S. from MIT and a Ph.D. from EPFL in Switzerland, where he studied how the structure of nanoparticle organic coatings affects their interaction with cells. After postdoctoral training in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at UC Davis Health, he established his own research group in 2018 in the department of Biomedical Engineering focused on harnessing nanotechnology for biomedical applications.
Currently, he leads a team of young researchers studying tiny biological particles called extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their potential to improve cancer detection and treatment. His research explores how EVs can serve as powerful biomarkers for disease and be engineered for targeted drug delivery. His lab’s work has recently spun out into a new start-up company called illumify Diagnostics (illumifyDx, Inc), focused on a spectroscopy-based test for early detection of cancer in just a small drop of blood.
Dr. Carney’s contributions have been recognized with several prestigious early career honors, including the NSF CAREER Award (2023), the Shu Chien Early Career Award from the University of California Systemwide Bioengineering consortium, the Nanoscale Emerging Investigator designation. Dr Carney was also named a Research Scholar by the American Cancer Society and a UC Davis Chancellor’s Fellow in 2025.
Through his work, Dr. Carney aims to bridge the gap between cutting-edge science and real-world healthcare, developing translational tools that could one day lead to earlier cancer detection and more effective, personalized treatments.
