Associate Editor Positions

General

  • Associate Editors will serve a 3-year term, subject to performance.
  • Associate Editors will make themselves aware of current ethical standards in scientific publishing and
  • agree to abide by the Code of Conduct for Editors as established by our publisher (Wiley): https://www.wiley.com/en-us/network/publishing/research-publishing/editors/editor-code-of-conduct.
  • Associate Editors will be asked to declare any matters that could be potentially perceived as conflicts of interest.
  • Associate Editors will be invited to attend on online Editorial Board Meeting 3 or 4 times per year. In person Editorial Board Meetings will also usually be held at the ISEV annual conference. Where an AE is not attending, an online option will usually be made available.

Manuscript Handling

  • Associate Editors will be assigned manuscripts by a Deputy Editor.
  • The Associate Editor is responsible for identifying and inviting appropriate reviewers, for evaluating the reviews received, and for making a recommendation to the handling Deputy Editor.
  • Each manuscript should receive a minimum of 2 reviews before a recommendation is made.
  • If the AE is assigned a manuscript that they do not think should be sent for peer review they can make this recommendation within the manuscript management system and inform the handling DE of the reasons why this is the case.
  • The Deputy Editor makes the final decision on whether to accept, reject, offer a revision, or seek (further) reviews on a manuscript. All ‘accept’ decisions are reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief.
  • ISEV Journals utilise an Image Check service via our publisher, Wiley. If any Image Check concerns are raised, the handling DE and AE will be contacted by the Executive Scientific Editor to provide input, both before contact is made with the author(s), as well as afterwards, when analysing the author(s) response. The EiC is always copied into these conversations.
  • We expect Associate Editors will handle at least 10 manuscripts per year.
  • To ensure a smooth Journal workflow AEs are expected to provide timely responses to actions in ScholarOne (our manuscript submission and management site).
  • Associate Editors can always request support from the Executive Scientific Editor.

Additional Duties

  • Associate Editors can choose to provide a review on a manuscript that they are handling or may be asked to provide a review on manuscripts that they are handling (by the Deputy Editor, Editor in Chief or Executive Scientific Editor) in order to prevent excessive delays.
  • If Associate Editors are approached by another journal to perform any task that has the potential to generate a conflict of interest (real or perceived) they should seek advice from the Editor-in-Chief prior to accepting.
  • It is the responsibility of the Associate Editor to declare any real or perceived conflicts of interest that may arise during the Associate Editor term.
  • Associate Editors are ambassadors for the Journal and are asked to promote the Journal as they deem appropriate. Some support for these kinds of activities may be available from the Executive Scientific Editor.
