About the International Society for Extracellular VesiclesOur MissionAdvancing extracellular vesicle research globally. Our VisionOur vision is to be the leading advocate and guide of extracellular vesicle research and to advance the understanding of extracellular vesicle biology. ISEV Bylaws The ISEV bylaws are available for download here. About ISEV In the early 2000’s, the field of extracellular vesicles was varied and disparate, and there was no uniformity in the methodology or nomenclature. It meant that findings were difficult to replicate and a true understanding of this nanoscale world was hampered by a difficulty in understanding the current state-of-the art. Sharing and cooperating for the good of scientific knowledge led those working in the field to start to want something more. It was in Paris, early 2011, at a meeting organised by Clotilde Théry and Graça Raposo, that Jan Lötvall proposed the formation of an international society to represent the interests of the field. An Interim Board was established, and some clear values were put at the forefront of what that Interim Board was to achieve. First, the society was to be an inclusive society, it was to bring together scientists around the world working in the field. Secondly, the society should give researchers the opportunity to learn and share their work, and finally the society should provide guidance on the best methodological practice in the field. Following extensive consultations with members of the community (and yes, much of this consultation was around the name!), the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) was formed in 2011. ISEV was originally registered as a Swedish non-profit organisation and was headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. The first ISEV annual meeting took place in the Gothenburg in 2012, attracting more than 400 participants. The annual ISEV meetings have taken place ever since; Boston (2013), Rotterdam (2014), Washington (2015), Rotterdam (2016), Toronto (2017), Barcelona (2018) and Kyoto (2019). The eruption of a global pandemic in 2020, moved the ISEV meeting online for 2020 and 2021, with the return to face-to-face in 2022 in Lyon. Each one saw growth in attendee numbers. In 2023, the annual meeting was held in Seattle, welcoming just under 1,200 participants. Now, ISEV is headquartered in New Jersey, USA, has 2 Gold Open Access Journals and over 1,700 members worldwide. ISEV is the leading voice in the field of extracellular vesicles, providing the community with standardisation and rigor (including the MISEV guidelines, 2014 and 2018), education opportunities, workshops and summer schools, a flagship annual meeting and two outstanding journals. ISEV was built by researchers who wanted to unite the field, for researchers who continue to push the boundaries of what is known and understood. ISEV remains committed to continuing to grow and develop to ensure it will always be what its members need.
